Lindum Turf
Jack Stannard – Assistant Workshop Manager
Lindum Turf based in the Vale of York grow and harvest 350 hectares of high-quality specialist turf annually using a trio of New Holland T6 series tractors supplied by Russells. All three are fitted with Trimble guidance systems linked to an integrated RTK base station.
Lindum Turf’s Assistant Workshop Manager Jack Stannard explains the benefits of running an advanced guidance system to assist with turf production.
Lindum Turf have been Russells customers for more than 30 years. The family run business is currently headed by Stephen and Dorothy Fell who moved from Worlaby in North Lincolnshire to Thorganby in the Vale of York in 1990 to expand their specialist turf growing enterprise.
The Fells also graze sheep and cattle on land least suited to turf production, and more recently have introduced wild flower turf to their portfolio. All of the products grown on their farm and nursery are 100% plastic free. The farm is currently run by John Stannard who has worked for the Fells since he left school.
His son Jack occupies the role of Assistant Workshop Manager and also carries out all of the drilling, spraying, and fertiliser spreading with a high specification 2022 New Holland T6.180 Blue Power tractor whilst his sister Sophie operates one of Lindum Turf’s Trebro turf harvesters.
Two-wheel drive New Holland TL70 tractors supplied by Russells once formed the backbone of their tractor fleet before these were replaced with a whole host of New Holland T5030, T5040, and TS100A Delta tractors.
Lindum Turf then began to move away from smaller two-wheel drive tractors equipped with very few creature comforts and driver aids to a fleet of larger and more efficient four-wheel drive models including a pair of T6050s and a T6.160. Their current front-line fleet comprises Jack’s T6.180 and a pair of 2021, and 2023 New Holland T6.155s supplied by Russells Boroughbridge depot.
All three tractors are equipped with Trimble XCN 1050 guidance screens and NAV 900 receivers that are linked to an integrated RTK base station situated on the farm. This is incorporated into Russells RTK network, and provides 2cm repeatable pass to pass accuracy.
The 175hp T6.180 is used by Jack for drilling, spraying and fertiliser spreading and is also equipped with ISOBUS task controller. The implement VT display runs through the tractor’s Intelliview screen and the XCN1050 provides section and variable rate control, and automated headland turning. The smaller 154hp T6.155s are used for mowing, and other day to day duties such as irrigation and rolling.
When Jack Stannard returned to work for Lindum Turf with his father in 2021, he was determined to make the most of the latest guidance and data recording technology compatible with their current fleet of modern New Holland tractors.
“I was immensely keen on increasing their versatility and performance to improve the efficiency of each stage of turf production, and this led me down the path of guidance systems.”
“We originally implemented an RTX based system before having our own RTK base station installed on the farm last year which provides an accurate signal up to 20 miles away.”
“The RTK base station has allowed us to refine each phase of turf production, from drilling, spraying, through to mowing and harvesting.”
“The major benefit of running identical guidance systems is they’ve enabled us to map each field, and share this data with each tractor and harvester so they follow the same A-B lines and tramlines for every task from cultivating, drilling, spraying and fertiliser spreading through to harvesting.”
“As a result, we’ve been able to drastically reduce fuel, chemical and fertiliser costs, eliminate wastage, whilst improving the timeliness of establishing different varieties of turf.”
Jack and his father have also been very impressed with Russells service and assistance.
“The back up, service, and assistance Russells technology specialists Robin Gibson and Romain Labarre provide us with is superb.”
“They’re prepared to help us out at a moment’s notice whist their enthusiasm and knowledge on Trimble and New Holland’s guidance products has enabled us to maximise the very latest technology in our fleet.”
“We’ve also begun using Trimble Remote Connection to trouble shoot any issues efficiently from either the tractor cab or remotely through a tablet, smart phone or personal computer.”
“Trimble AutoSync software can also be used to transfer job and field data efficiently between our machinery fleet.”
“We’re also able to monitor the performance, and service schedules of our tractors using telematics through the MyNewHolland app, a feature we’re keen to use much more in the future.”
Russells extends its thanks to Lindum Turf and Jack Stannard for their time and assistance with this testimonial.

Lindum Turf’s Jack Stannard has been very impressed with the performance of the Trimble guidance systems fitted to their fleet of New Holland tractors that are linked to an integrated RTK base station situated on the farm.
Jack says the Trimble XCN 1050 screen is exceptionally straight forward to navigate, follow and adjust.
Jack uses his T6.180’s Intelliview screen to run the implement VT display. “It’s far easier to monitor and make adjustments to the functionality of each implement this way,” he says.
Jack Stannard reckon’s New Holland’s spacious and ergonomic Horizon cab is the perfect operator environment for installing guidance technology such as Trimble’s XCN 1050 screen.
Lindum Turf’s Trebro turf harvesters run the same Trimble guidance systems as their fleet of New Holland tractors which has eliminated a significant amount of waste, and reduced fuel bills says Jack Stannard.
The New Holland T6.180 can also be set up to run automated headland turning through its Trimble XCN 1050 guidance screen.
Lindum Turf invested in Trimble Guidance systems supplied and installed by Russells to its fleet of New Holland T6 series tractors so they accurately follow the same A-B lines and tramlines in every field for every task they carry out.
Lindum Turf have embraced Trimble’s advanced guidance and data recording systems so they can produce the finest quality turf in the most efficient and cost-effective way possible.
